Hello, and welcome to GYFHL’s blog for news, events, and updates!
The Greensboro Youth Field Hockey League (GYFHL) is led by Jana Benscoter. While in college, Jana played field hockey for The University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where she spent two summers coaching high school field hockey players at White Mountain Sports summer camp in Deerfield, MA. Jana began playing field hockey in 1991 at South Western High School in Hanover, PA. She played four years in high school and participated in USA Field Hockey’s Futures program. Jana was a member of Central Penn Patriots team in 1994.
In 2006, Jana founded the Greensboro area’s first adult field hockey league with the help of Greensboro Parks and Recreation. In 2007, she co-founded GYFHL with Jen Nierle. Nierle decided to spend more time with her family and to step down at the end of the 2007 season.
The Greensboro Youth Field Hockey League’s first season in 2007 saw 41 players between 10 and 18 years of age. Five teams comprised the league. The 10- to 12-year-old girls wore the colors of Blue Diamonds, Electric Lime, and Jr. Bengals, while the 13- to 18-year-old girls played as Bruisers and Scarlet Snakes.
